Madison Community Cooperative
housing for people, not profit

In 1968, eight representatives of cooperatives in Madison came back from a co-op conference in Washington, D.C., and decided to combine their strength to form an umbrella organization that would provide stability and better services to their members. That federation became Madison Association of Student Cooperatives (MASC)-1968 then Madison Community Cooperative (MCC)-1971, which has gone through many changes in membership and direction over the past five decades.

MCC strives to improve the Madison community by providing low-cost, not-for-profit cooperative housing for very low- to moderate income people and to be inclusive of underrepresented and marginalized groups.

MCC Works Toward Its Mission By:

  • Educating its members about cooperative principles and the management of cooperative housing
  • Providing resources , services, and administrative support to its members and member houses
  • Developing cooperative housing and services
  • Assisting very low- to moderate-income students afford higher education by providing low-cost housing convenient to Madison campuses
  • Striving to be inclusive of underrepresented and marginalized members of the community, including people of color, lesbian, bisexual, gay, and transgender people, people with disabilities, parents raising children, and international people
  • Striving to be environmentally responsible by reducing the carbon footprints of our cooperative houses through high efficiency HVAC systems and solar power sources to name a few
  • Maintaining a community of cooperative by affiliating with other cooperatives, non-profit community groups, schools, neighborhood associations, and collectives for the exchange of information.

Madison Community Cooperative reaffirms its support and commitment to the rights and welfare of Black people, to the idea that Black lives matter, and to the Black Lives Matter movement. We raise our voice in chorus with the many other voices saying this same thing: Black lives matter. This statement needs to be made now, and in the future, as long as it takes until the reality of the world reflects its underlying truth. We demand an end to police violence, police harassment, and the incarceration of Black and Indigenous people in Madison and beyond.
